He called it a Wardian Case, and it changed how ordinary people kept the plants they treasured. Ferns and orchids too delicate to survive a smoky Victorian home suddenly thrived on the parlor windowsill — a small sealed world that kept something rare and personal alive, protected from everything hostile outside it.
